Rather than competing for dominance in the renewable energy space, African nations can achieve greater impact by aligning their strengths. Southern Africa, for example, enjoys superior solar resources that can be utilized for expansive solar farms. Coastal regions with high wind potential, such as those in Namibia, Egypt, and East Africa, can complement this effort by supplying the energy needed for electrolysis. This coordinated strategy, combined with shared infrastructure and distribution channels, could allow Africa to supply green hydrogen to Europe, the United States, and beyond, securing its position as a vital player in the global energy landscape.

Building a Unified Value Chain

Developing a comprehensive value chain for green hydrogen is critical to ensuring long-term economic benefits. This involves not only exporting renewable fuels but also building local industries around the production and application of green energy. Processing locally mined platinum group metals (PGMs), manufacturing electrolysers and fuel cells, and expanding the use of green hydrogen across African markets are pivotal steps in this journey.

For such a transformation, investments in skills development, technology creation, and infrastructure are crucial. By localizing production and fostering innovation, Africa can reduce its reliance on imports, generate jobs, and stimulate economic growth. Existing assets, such as ports and pipelines, can be optimized to expedite the distribution of green hydrogen within Africa and to international markets, ensuring a seamless flow of resources and energy.

The Role of Regional Cooperation

To fully harness the potential of green hydrogen, African nations must prioritize regional cooperation. By pooling resources, standardizing policies, and engaging in joint research initiatives, countries can achieve economies of scale that make large-scale projects viable. A prime example of this vision is the planned hydrogen pipeline connecting Namibia to South Africa, with extensions to Saldanha Bay and Johannesburg. There is currently little domestic demand for green hydrogen, and an excessive reliance on exports may expose African economies to changes in the world market. With a collective GDP of $3.1 trillion in 2023, Africa has the economic foundation to compete with larger markets such as the European Union, the United States, and China. Key economies like South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and Morocco, which account for nearly half of the continent’s GDP, must lead the charge in building a cohesive energy strategy.

The path forward lies in leveraging platforms like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and regional initiatives within the African Union. By aligning resources, sharing knowledge, and investing in skills development, African countries can accelerate their transition to a green hydrogen economy, reducing their carbon footprint and fostering innovation.
